Former Tableau CMO Reveals How to Unlock Your True Potential

by | Jul 13, 2020

Each of us is born with unique talents and special gifts, though many of us struggle to recognize their true value.

But here’s the truth: You are wrong if you think you don’t have something special to offer.

I promise you have at least one skill that sets you apart from the crowd. You are unique, and you are here for a reason.

It’s your responsibility to discover that gift and unlock it in order to live a fulfilling life.

The path to finding your true calling isn’t marked by a magic wand. Instead, you have to put in the effort—experimenting with different things that spark your interest until you feel it deep down in your gut. That’s when you’ll know you’ve found your purpose and the way you’re meant to contribute to society.

I recently sat down with Elissa Fink, former CMO of Tableau Software, to discuss how you can begin the journey of uncovering your purpose. During our conversation, she shared an analogy that struck me deeply: “eating dessert before dinner.”

Elissa explained that, just like when we were kids and wanted dessert before finishing our vegetables, discovering your purpose can feel like a tempting distraction. But it’s important to stay focused and aware of what truly excites you.

She advised becoming conscious of when time seems to fly by because you’re deeply immersed in something you love. Pay attention to those moments when you’re “in the flow.”

Another key hint Elissa shared: what do you tackle first thing in the morning? If you tend to tackle tasks you love as soon as you wake up, it’s a sign that you’re naturally gravitating toward your true calling. If you’re unsure, Elissa recommends journaling what you’re drawn to each morning and looking back to see what patterns emerge.

So, what comes naturally to you? What are your strengths? Are you using your natural gifts in your career? If not, remember: it’s never too late to make a change.
